There are unavoidable comparisons between this and the Locke Lamora series by Scott Lynch and the show Firefly by Joss Whedon but the similarities in no way detract from it being a very good book. It’s hard to miss with a combination of space pirates and steampunk. The author does a tremendous job with the characters. They are all true-to-life with interesting backstories. I especially liked the checkered past of Captain Frey and how his attitude changes over time. Pure fun prevails as there are close calls, shootouts and general mayhem. Also a fine job is done with the world-building and there are some hilarious scenes and dialogue. The story begins with rollicking adventure then takes itself a little too seriously towards the end but despite that and a few plot twists that have been used ad infinitum this was a highly enjoyable tale and I look forward to the rest of the books in this series.
