China Miéville thinks big. No tiny little ideas in this guy's writing. Here we've got an elevator. As in a veritable behemoth that launches payloads into outer space. For some writers attempting this topic the result would be a bore, but put into the author's capable hands it's another fine short story with such finesse you can imagine standing and looking up at it. And I loved this bit:"the visitors uttered alien equivalents of polite, uninterested “hmmm”s, like a queen visiting a biscuit factory."4.5 stars, that line alone is worth half a star.
